A Taste of Maldivian Cuisine: Mas Huni, Garudhiya, and Maldivian Curries
On my trip to the Maldives, I was eager to explore its food culture. I had heard about Mas Huni, Garudhiya, and Maldivian curries, but nothing prepared me for how much I would enjoy them.
I started my morning with Mas Huni, a traditional breakfast made from tuna, coconut, onion, and chili, served with warm roshi (flatbread). Sitting at a beachside café, I took my first bite. The freshness of the tuna mixed with the sweetness of the coconut and the kick of chili was a delightful combination. I enjoyed every bite, watching the waves gently roll onto the shore. A cup of hot black tea completed the experience, making it the perfect start to my day.
For lunch, I decided to try Garudhiya, a fragrant Maldivian fish soup. The steaming bowl arrived, filled with pieces of tuna, served alongside rice, lime, and chili. I squeezed some lime into the broth and took a spoonful—the flavor was simple yet deeply comforting. The warmth of the soup, paired with the salty ocean breeze, made for a truly soothing meal. It felt like a dish meant for island life—light yet satisfying.
Dinner was all about Maldivian curries. I ordered a rich, coconut-based tuna curry with rice and papadum. The spices were perfectly balanced, warming my taste buds without overwhelming them. Eating under the soft glow of lanterns at an open-air restaurant, I savored each bite, feeling completely immersed in Maldivian flavors.
Food in the Maldives isn’t just about eating—it’s an experience. The flavors, the setting, and the island’s relaxed pace make every meal special. I knew I would cherish these flavors long after I left this paradise.
